Each of the four Okanagan College campuses has its own context, with its own challenges. In 2014, Thinkspace was brought in to update an existing master plan and address all four campuses in a cohesive and data-driven fashion.
The first step involved workshops and meetings with senior administrative and academic staff to develop overall strategies, then each of the academic and trades areas as well as with students, and administrative / support departments for more specific requirements. That was followed by an exhaustive analysis of space utilization on all campuses, which indicated considerable under-utilization in Penticton, Vernon, and Salmon Arm, but very intense utilization in Kelowna.
Research was then done into the regional economic context, as well as current and projected demographic make-up of the populations and their potential impact on enrollment; the result was a modest projected growth.
Finally, the team analyzed the existing physical structure of the campuses and developed recommendations designed to preserve campus quality, and free up land for growth without compromising quality.
The College adopted the Thinkspace plan and its recommendations. Recent changes to the campuses have largely followed the plan, including the addition of a new residence building in Kelowna.
