The Rotary Centre of Arts is a downtown community facility with spaces for both the visual arts and performance arts, including a 300-seat theatre. The project involved taking an old fruit packing house and wrapping it with new spaces that have technically key functions. One of those spaces is the atrium, which forms a gateway to the building and is the circulation space for the centre, as well as the focal point for activity – complete with a bistro and coffee shop.
This project has made a significant contribution to the urban context in which it sits, and the centre is an important part of a growing arts and culture district. The outdoor space is an important element in making the project successful, through a celebration of the area’s orchard and wine industries.
The Centre was completed in conjunction with DIALOG (formerly Hotson Bakker Architects).
