The new 9,228 sq m Stitó:s Lá:lém totí:lt Elementary / Middle School is located on the former Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack, on the traditional territory of the Sto:lo First Nation.
The design approach combines 21st century learning objectives and the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Overarching design concepts such as porosity, flexibility, views, and a sense of place have been integrated to create a supportive learning environment.
The two-storey learning commons establishes an inclusive learning community and physical hub for the school. It encourages and supports future-oriented learning with its central location, communal stairs, and views of the surrounding river valley, which emphasize the school’s connection with the land.
Unique features of the school include a compact east / west orientation to maximize buildable land between environmental setbacks and covenants, strategically located skylights that bring sunlight into the building, outdoor learning areas along the Fraser River and extensive use of mass timbers throughout to promote biophilia.
Neighborhood Learning and community support programs have also been integrated, addressing the School District’s organizational and operational needs, supporting the community at large as well as the broader needs of the City of Chilliwack.
