The Alpha Secondary School seismic upgrade, demolition, and addition project revamped a 65-year-old school to create a safe, upgraded, and modern learning environment.

A much-needed seismic upgrade structurally reinforced the existing school to ensure the safety of staff and students in the event of an earthquake. A portion of the school that could not be upgraded was demolished and a new two-storey wing added.

The addition pulls the school together and helps to eliminate the disconnect between buildings, while creating an attractive new entryway and modernizing the space. It includes 14 classrooms, seven science classrooms and labs, four computer labs, administration space, and common learning areas. Students are able to socialize, study, and learn in the bright, open learning commons. The open atrium space has been designed to bring as much light as possible into the building.

An updated main entrance to the school with a widened drop-off loop, outdoor plazas, a landscaped student courtyard, and a revised asphalt parking area complement the work that took place inside the building.

This project was featured on the cover of August 2019 issue of Award magazine.
