Thinkspace

Belmont Secondary School

Client: School District No. 62 (Sooke)
Location: Langford, BC
Overview:

This vibrant school presents a prominent, yet human scaled presence, within an established neighborhood in the Victoria suburb of Langford.

For site efficiency, a three-story building was proposed with principal learning spaces, or learning communities, organized along an atrium. This inter-connected space facilitates easy orientation to all levels. The three-story atrium, which increases in width and length from east to west, culminates at the north-south entry cross-roads as a two-story multi-purpose space.

The library-media tech centre is located at this cross-roads on the second level. The library is located at the centre of the school, occupying pride of place on the interior and exterior of the building. The library is for more purposeful, focused study while the forecourt beside the student store will be the more casual and social ante room to the library.

Unique features of the project include:

  • multi-use project areas for 21st century learning thru development of classroom pods
  • multi-level atrium space allowing light to penetrate all 3 levels
  • oversize gymnasium to allow three smaller gyms in one space
