Belmont Secondary School is a 13,535 m2 design-build collaboration between Thinkspace and Yellowridge Design Build. This three-storey, 31-classroom school is built into an adjacent rock hillside, and makes extensive use of mass timber in the form of glulam beams and columns, and nail-laminated timber (NLT) roof panels.

The 1,200-student school features multi-use project areas and classroom pods for groups of approximately 150 students that support the principles of 21st century learning, a large atrium space that allows light to shine into all three levels, and an oversized gymnasium that fits three smaller gyms into one space. The gymnasium and multi-purpose space were buried into the hillside, in order to bring natural daylight into the building.

Learning communities are organized along the atrium, which facilitates easy orientation to all levels of the school. The atrium increases in width and length from east to west, culminating at the north-south entry crossroads as a two-story multi-purpose space. The library / media tech centre is located at this juncture, and forms the heart of the school.

In addition to delivering thoughtfully-designed academic spaces, the building also provides facilities for neighbourhood residents. Shared facilities include a four-court gymnasium, multi-purpose room, kitchen, and drama room.
