Gus Spanos

B.Arch., Architect AIBC, MRAIC
Senior Architect

Gus is a registered architect with over 30 years of diversified experience in programming, planning, design, construction documentation, construction administration and proposal writing. He has led large project teams and stakeholder groups to collaborate and facilitate decisions on project vision, design, constructability and sustainability.

In his first two years of architecture school in Ottawa, Gus skated to school on the Rideau Canal during the winter months after spending hours and hours in studio drawing. Eventually, architecture took over drawing as an interest for Gus, who became fascinated with the intersection of technology and art; how ideas represented in two-dimensional drawing form can be manifested in a three-dimensional object transformed into a building suitable for habitation.

In recent years Gus’s practice has cultivated specific expertise in the healthcare and post-secondary markets for infrastructure upgrades and building care facilities and teaching spaces. A benefit of this diverse experience is his ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders while maintaining an open line of communication throughout every phase of a project.

Gus’ passion is to share his knowledge and mentor younger architects to improve their skills and gain experience in the architectural profession’s many facets. He mentors intern architects through the Architectural Institute of BC (AIBC) Mentorship Program and volunteers as an oral reviewer for the AIBC; the last step for an intern to becoming a registered architect.

Gus has long been a practitioner and teacher of karate, having achieved a 5th-degree black belt in the discipline. He is a volunteer minor hockey coach, which he does for the joy of giving back and helping kids improve their skills while having fun. He is also an avid road cyclist.
