MAC/Nexus Community Centre
The District of Lake Country, with a population of about 13,000, is one of the fastest growing communities in the Okanagan. The demographic make-up includes a high ratio of seniors with an increasing proportion of families with children.
The Nexus is a community complex comprised of the Winfield arena, Food Bank, Senior’s Centre, Horseshoe Club, Curling Club, baseball diamond park, and a memorial rose garden, which also has access to the trail creek. The Nexus site is located at 9830 Bottom Wood Lake Road in the civic centre.
The requirements for a new community centre were born out of the sale of the existing Winfield Elementary School, which housed the Lake Country Boys and Girls Club and by locating the Senior’s Centre to the Nexus site. This grouping at activities will form a Multi-Generational Activity Centre (MAC) which will act as the hub of the Nexus site activity.
The scope for this project consists of four parts:
- A new 2-storey community centre (The MAC) consisting of approximately 7,000 sq. ft. with spaces for a daycare and activity spaces for teenagers.
- Renovation and upgrade to the existing Senior’s Centre.
- Renovations to the Winfield Arena bringing the washrooms and accessibility up to current code. There is also scope for upgrading the existing player’s lounge and a new extension to provide a prominent entrance to the arena.
- Exterior upgrades to the Nexus site, including additional parking and landscaping. There will be an external link to the existing Senior’s Centre.
