Thinkspace

Rotary Centre Of Arts

Client: City of Kelowna
Location: Kelowna, BC
Overview:

This project has made a significant contribution to the urban context it sits in. The outdoor space is an important element in making the project successful. The project involved taking an old packing house and wrapping it with some new spaces that have technically key functions. One of those spaces was the Atrium which is the circulation space as well as a hub of activity complete with a Bistro and coffee shop. The Atrium is a gateway to the building. The facility includes spaces for both the visual arts and performance arts including a 300 seat theatre.

The project was developed to make an urban impact as well, which included the Art Walk. The Art Walk creates a spine that reaches out into the community as well as highlighting the Orchard and Wine Industry with grapes that grow on the trellis and mosaic artwork on the concrete structure that form light posts and benches. It is envisioned that this internal spine will eventually connect to the downtown bus mall. The walk provides a structure to guide pedestrians in the arts precincts. We completed this project in association with Hotson Bakker Architects.
